Insurance refusal

Options
On the 16th of june 2025 at around 5pm I was on the cambridge roundabout in the correct lane trying to go straight and someone was on the right of me trying to cross over two lanes and he nearly hit the person infront of me. Then the person infront of me got away and the person the right had stopped and I proceeded to drive straight only for him to drive straight into my door. He drove off and parked up and I followed. We then exchanged details but he refused to give me his insurance details claiming he wanted to settle it by paying for the repairs.

I got a quote from a repair shop and on top of it i will need a courtesy car to get around whilst my car is being repaired

He has since rang me multiple times telling me his car is a mobility and doesnt want to claim via his insurance as hes worried they will take his car. Telling me hes on benefits. Then told me he wanted to come meet me. I said are you meeting me at the bodyshop? He said no just you. I said you cannot drive all that way to just come see me, for what?  He said to speak with you as his English isn't good. I told him his English is perfectly fine and he can speak to me over the phone. He offered me £500. I told him that wont even cover the labour of the job and I wont be paying anything out of my pocket. I told him I wasnt pressuring him to pay just yet. But it would be better if he went through his insurance and hes assuming I will accept his offer. I'm getting exceedingly annoyed at this point now.

Presumably you have already reported this to your insurance company.  You are obliged to do this in any case but since he's being a pain I would just tell him your insurance company will be contacting his and leave it at that.

In my opinion £500 is unlikely to cover the obvious damage let alone a courtesy car and any other issues that might be discovered during repairs.

As above, I'd just politely say that as you've notified your insurance company you would feel more comfortable letting them deal with it going forward, and refer him to them . Hopefully you have already reported this to your own company.

Your repair shop quote is almost £2k once you include VAT. I don't get the feeling that the guy who hit your car is going to stump up for that.
Let your insurance company deal with it. It's why you have insurance.

Have you checked to see if his vehicle is actually insured?

The "Your Vehicle" is the clue, and you have to make a declaration that it is your own car and acknowledge its an offence to use the form on a vehicle not owned or insured by you or your employer.  It's also not very helpful because it checks for today, not on the sate of the accident.

To check a third party vehicle you use https://www.askmid.com/askmidenquiry.aspx which costs £10 but also critically allows you to define the date you want to check as of and it returns their full insurance details (insurer, policy number, claims tele[hone number etc) and not just a Yes/No.

Assuming the OP has informed their insurers though it'd be a bit of a waste of £10 because their insurers will have a bulk licence for MID and will be able to give the OP the same information at no cost.

If you click that other button it takes you to exactly the page DullGreyGuy linked, where it states:
This enquiry will be charged at £10 which is non-refundable.
So no, he didn't miss the other button.

Your insurance company will be able to see who his insurers are.

Thank you everyone for your advice and input. I've gone to my insurer. I'm not sure why he was trying to negotiate fees with me when I sent them the breakdown for the repairs and that didn't even cover the courtesy car 🥴
