Nectar points stolen in spite of locking it

In part prompted by this thread, I logged in and checked my Nectar balance online and also decided to do a basic spend of points in store.  Just the simple transaction 500 points for £2.50.

I have to be honest, I have been collecting Nectar points *forever* and *never* spend the points so I thought the initial balance was on the low side (about £30 worth) but the spend all worked as it should (and I needed to actually swipe the card to spend) and when I go back home, there is an e-mail confirming the points spent and where and asking me to make contact if that was not me.

Obviously, everything worked as it should in my case but I struggle to see how some people have posted that they had large amounts of points stolen and were unaware.  Given the physical card was required to spend the Points (in my case at least), I am unsure how the points could be stolen but I guess there are online redemption methods etc.  BUT, the e-mail confirming the spend was very quick so I think the big learning I'd take is to always make sure the Nectar account is linked to the correct e-mail address and accept communications.

As an aside, I could not really see that there is any way for Nectar points to be redeemed for better value than the spend instore conversion so I might just as well use the remaining points towards Christmas Dinner.  Is there a more valuable redemption that I have missed?
I only ever use the app, which points spending is locked.
Does no allow any spending, while locked.
Even tried a unlock while parked in car park, still would not me spend them after going round shop.
Had to unlock day before before it would actually allow me to spend points.
