Rates change all the time, but I've recently taken euros from a Santander machine in mainland Spain, and got just over 1.18.
After you ask for your euros there is a screen offering to charge you in pounds and telling what your 50 euros will cost you in sterling. You need to decline that option, and pick the one that says something like 'allow my own bank to do the conversion.
If you get a receipt from the ATM which gives a price in pounds you've picked the wrong one.
It's a learning experience, and thankfully you've only withdrawn 50 euros. To put that into perspective, it has only cost you around £4 more than you would have paid at my rate.

gord115 said:Yes it was Santander ATM at a Santander branch in Benidorm.A Santander UK debit card, including that of the Edge current account, is fee/commission free if used at a fully branded Banco Santander ATM located at a branch...... as long as you opt to have the transaction actioned in Euros. As suggested above, it appears you inadvertently chose GBP.Unless, perhaps it was an Edge credit card ? Thay are not fee free at BS holes in the wall.

You seem to have to select the correct option on two screens. The first one I have select “Decline Conversion” and on the second whether to be charged in Euros or Pounds, I always select Euros.Interesting - Starling take no fee, however there are now very few, if any, bank owned ATMs in Spain that do not impose a fee for withdrawing Euros.Unicaja may be the last ?May I ask which bank ATM you used ?
