Or it’s possible that the person before at the same pump drove off without paying and then the OP paid their bill but not their own. I was at a filing station once where that must have happened as the cashier asked me which of two amounts I was looking to pay from that pump.

Normally I wouldn't buy food from a service station due to the cost. If I ever did get anything it would be a bottle of water that cost's a couple of pound. I have been checking other petrol receipts and at the time I would either fill the car up between which was between £45 and £50 or put in enough to get me home.

This is part on my issue I just cant remember, I have a record I went to Southampton on that day and there is a message I sent saying the services were dead and the roads were empty.

I've passed on some of the comments from here to my work who have said there going to pass my details on to TDR as the driver of the vehicle and ask for no further contact.

So for now I believe its just wait and see what happens next.

But was it normally round numbers (or near as) or all over the place?

Would you typically buy something on card and at the same time pay for something else with cash? Do you normally pay with cash for stuff? Was cash even an option at that time with Covid?

Would you ever put just £5 or £7 of fuel in the car at the high rates of service stations?

Were it to go to court the judge would ultimately decide if it's more likely than not that you did stop for fuel and failed to pay for it. The odds arent looking great for you given the photo, that you do appear to have gone to the station from your text and can't find trace of having made an appropriate payment. However just because you are liable for the fuel doesnt mean the rest of their costs are reasonable though you would expect to pay some extra to cover the time & effort to trace etc.

At least we've moved on from the notion that the Registered Keeper is responsible.

Do they know you were driving or have they just taken a stab at it?
