    Possibly it was photographed prior to being put through the door - the name signed for is a relic from pre-covid times.
    Signed for is a waste of money as it has the same service and compensation as ordinary post.  RM24 or 48 is much better value if you want proof of delivery and a much higher level of compensation.
    It's worth a looking at the tracking info as it should show a signature as proof of delivery. It is possible royal mail have made a mistake and haven't recorded it as delivered but my guess is that the level of compensation is so low that royal mail staff are instructed to take a chance on anyone fraudulently claiming the item was not received, rather than hang about on the doorstep. The current service specifications;
    • Online delivery confirmation
    • Signature on delivery
    • Aim to deliver next working day, including Saturdays
    • Compensation cover up to £20**

    Hello, regarding Royal Mail tracked 48 with signature, it says for small parcel weight up to and including 2kg £5.55. What if the weight is a few grams over? will this reflect on the £5.55 (ie) adjusted to match the amount of grams over that of 2kg? many thanks.

    I would guess there is some leeway before they penalise, however if they judge the parcel is overweight it will be (sur)charged as a 10kg medium parcel.

    I’ve been caught out with smaller parcels before where Rm have decided my 250g LL was actually 260g and they charged the buyer, so I tend not to risk it with RM. I suspect though it depends on how much over, maybe a few Grammies, but perhaps more than a low amount and they might check.

    can you pack it differently at all to shave the extra off?

    To answer your specific question, postage prices aren’t incremental, so if you are taking it to the PO they will automatically charge you the next weight band, and if you send it without it being weighed, then buyer will get a penalty charge.
