You want this for UK bank accounts that you have, but you're not resident in the UK?

Do the banks in question know you're living in Australia?

Normally, not being resident in the UK would be against the bank account T&C's unless you've gone down the expat route, but then you probably wouldn't need a UK SIM for 2FA in that scenario.

Could you clarify what the situation is OP. Which institutions do you have accounts with.

Obviously that would breach the bank's t&cs around disclosure of data but that's just an extra breach after not being UK resident.

Believe it is true that a new SIM (e- or otherwise) has to be activated in it's "home" territory before it can be used for roaming overseas. All network roaming conditions have clauses that will terminate roaming after a period of use.

Could use a virtual service like Xpatfone.

Also likely to be annoying as you'll almost certainly find the "lucky" family member is asleep / unavailable when you need the code.

I had to get my husband to tell me a 2FA code for our joint account due to an issue with my card, but the time difference was only an hour, and it was a one off.

You could use a pay as you go UK SIM, provided it is initially setup and briefly used in the UK. A friend/relative could then post it to you.
Permanent overseas roaming is frowned upon by the networks which may result in the SIM ceasing to work. Some are lucky, but there is no guarantee that the SIM will work long term.

There are various virtual landline number services that then divert to your mobile.

Andrew’s and Arnold will do a VoIP based number for £1.20 a month, this includes 07 prefixes.

I work for an IT/Telco and we activate SIMS/ ESIMS abroad all the time.
