Can't believe no one's yet mentioned the Google Print Search. This offers thousands of books in a scanned-in format, you can read page by page (including illustrations). Very
useful.

Just read through most of this thread and have been trying to find the story Lion, Witch and Wardrobe on a free site (or at least a summary of it). Can anyone find anything. If not are there any free stories for children aged 6-12. There was a link which susie19 posted on here in June to a website which I used a lot before but its not working now or is it just me? The stories were just the right size for a bedtime story and my kids loved them.

How about reading through the original notes of Leonardo Di Vinci, Jane Austin's handwritten novel or the original version of Alice in Wonderland.
The British library site has online version of these (and more) that you can leaf through at your leisure online.
Its really cool - you use your mouse to turn the pages (I recommend Broadband & you need to be patient for a couple of mins while it loads

Free audiobooks at librivox.org
The LibriVox objective is to make all books in the public domain available, for free, in audio format on the internet. Books are recorded by volunteers and hosted at the Internet Archive.Hi, I'm Mich

I found http://www.audiobooksforfree.com/screen_main.asp..
It's an american site. You can order for free but the quality isn't 100% but still good enough to listen to or you can choose to pay $3 upwards for smaller files and better quality. I have downloaded free books and they are fine. Especially good for my mp3 player because there are number of separate files and I don't need to worry to about finding my place again.0 -

And a great resource for those who will have to make long journeys this summer with bored (little) kids in the car is this brilliant kids' audio books site:
