why are uni credit requesting 10 months of earnings before the date of our uni credit claim?

why are uni credit requesting 10 months of earnings before the date of our uni credit claim ? they want combined earnings from april 2024 until january 2025. Febuary we put a universal claim in as my wife was starting university and i would be the only earner although she gets a bursary of £430 a month. so we didnt recieve any payments until june 2025 as my mum took ill and i needed to stop work to care for her over 50 hours a week. so been on uni credit with carers element on top i am unable to work. which means no sanctions for not actively seaking work. why do they need this info now?

    Because they are..

Nobody here is going to know exactly why, clearly from your many threads on your situation, UC feel the need to go back through your finances to check that you are getting the correct amount.

from other research i have just found that the more you have earned before you claim, actually works in your favour (within reason) as it qualifies you for the 9 month grace period. i am surprised at this

The comments I post are personal opinion. Always refer to official information sources before relying on internet forums. If you have a problem with any organisation, enter into their official complaints process at the earliest opportunity, as sometimes complaints have to be started within a certain time frame.

That's so the system is able to provide an uncapped safety net for those between jobs, but isn't intended to provide a 'long-term lifestyle' choice. It also gives claimants a strong incentive to get back into work.
