Just got BT Option 2 at £12.45 p/m (£2 reduction p/m)

With Option 1 costing £11.00 (or £11.50 can't remember which) I was given an offer for Option 2 at the price of £12.45 per month for line rental (which means free evening and weekend calls to landlines) and on top of that I was not charged for line connection, I even categorically and specifically asked in these words "I have read on the internet that people are charged about £125 to £135 for connection or setup, can you confirm that I won't be paying this?" and she confirmed and went on to add that I will only be paying £12.45 per month for line rental - she explained that my bills will display £14.45 charge and then a £2.00 credit each month.

I hope this is useful to anybody else, please advise if you think I got a good deal or was I suckered in to a 12 month contract whilst not saving much at all really?

Only thing I need to do now is find a good broadband deal...

(Just a note: I moved in to my current flat about 5 months ago and it already had a BT box on the wall in one of the rooms and also an NTL box in another room, the BT advisor checked over the phone and told me I can simply use the current box and connecting it up has no charge)

That £12.45 is a (small) rip-off and is £1.95/month more than you need to pay.

Line rental (BT Together Option 1) will cost you £10.50/month incl. VAT if you pay by DD and opt for the paper-free billing 50p/month discount. Stay with that and change to a CPS provider for your calls.

Free evening and weekend UK 01/02 calls of up to 90 minutes each (BT restrict you to 60 minutes) are available via Primus Saver Option 2 CPS.

Please see the 'HERE' link in my signature below to save even more on your calls.
Time has moved on (much quicker than it used to - or so it seems at my age) and my previous advice on residential telephony has been or is now gradually being overtaken by changes in the retail market. Hence, I have now deleted links to my previous 'pearls of wisdom'. I sincerely hope they helped save some of you money.

I think your find you have actually agreed to a 18 month contract for the call package.

Thats a different offer, he has a 12 month contract I would imagin as thats the normal length for the £1.45 offer.

  • I really don't think this is such a bad deal. I am thinking of doing the same, but for £11.95 per month, after dispensing with paper bills. The contract term is indeed 12 months.

I will use 18185 with an Orchid dialler as recommended by Heinz. But I don't think the £1.45 from Primus is enough of a monthly saving to justify the hassle of checking another bill and remembering to make enough BT calls to avoid being charged £1 for 1571 and £1.75 for Caller Display, which is nearly double the Primus saving. I could see the point when Option 2 was at the standard rate of £13.95, but not with the £2 discount (reinforced by some unenthusiastic reviews of Primus).

I suppose the 12-month contract could be seen as disadvantageous but I am not planning to leave BT. The only really attractive thing I think could change my mind is the penny mobile option from Primus.

But you need to make chargeable calls to avoid paying for these features. I dont think inclusive calls count.

If you dont make many evening & weekend calls you might as well stay on option 1 if you dont want to save a few pounds.;)

I assume you are using a BT Residential Landline.

    1. Nominate the mobile as your Best Friend on BT Friends and Family.
    http://www2.bt.com/friendsandfamily

    2. Sign up for BT Call Mobile. http://www.callsave.bt.com/callmobile/index.html

    Your save about 40%.
  • I didn't make the necessary distinction between chargeable and inclusive calls. Looks like I might move to Primus then, since I'd have to go through the same hassle of making some 1280 calls on BT Option 2. BT is rather shooting itself in the foot here.

    Thanks for the information.
