Anybody had there phone socket replaced by one of those plugs that require power? We now have one less plug we already have hive heating and a new router. We had fibre already so what’s the point of these new boxes other than they are annoying with flashing lights and power?

You will have had Fibre To The Cabinet and your router will have served as a modem as well as a router.

Now you have gone to Fibre To The Premises the new box is a modem which takes the fibre connection and sends a cable to the router.

The next step is for ISPs to start providing ONT (the new box)/Router combined.   Not sure when this will happen but it will happen.

The Huawei EchoLife EG8145V5 is a router that has an ONT built in, no doubt at some point that sort of device will be available from ISPs but I've no idea when that will happen.    I have a feeling that BT Openreach are happy with how things are and will probably want to keep the status quo as it gives them a bit of control.

So basically the router I got from Utility warehouse won’t be required in a few years and might free up a plug?

Yes, I think that is what will happen.    Originally, years ago, the modems were seperate to the routers but were eventually combined in a new device.     I think that will happen in a few years if people like Openreach allow it.

Presumably they will have some say as someone will have to disconnect/reterminate the optic fibre from Openreach's ONT to plug into a combined piece of kit.
Regarding plugs required - i've got my ONT ,router and laptop charger all plugged into a protected multiway adapter -so only one mains socket needed.

I'm still FTTC / SOGEA but my router (plus the power adapter for my DECT base station, and a couple of other things) are all powered from a second-hand APC UPS. Something like this:
Only needs one wall socket and my broadband, WiFi and landline all remain available during short power cuts (which are rare here but not unknown).
