I remember the post office used to accept them. But I doubt it now, but they should have some information on it.

Call their complaints line (0800 282 390 from the UK). Explain your husband's mobility issues and the difficulty of getting to a branch using the Equality Act legislation. They should treat you better 👍

Thanks for all the replies very informative The Travellers Cheques are actually Barclays and are not sterling
The answer is on Barclays website

From 25 January 2024, you’ll no longer be able to pay foreign cheques into your personal, Premier or Business Banking accounts
These aren't foreign cheques - they had standard MICR coding and were issued by Barclays Bank PLC
Barclays Bank PLC was their main entity before ring fencing but still operates as sister to Barclays Bank UK PLC
They also don't strictly speaking have an expiry date or go stale like domestic cheques so don't lose value

The OP has stated that they are worth around £80 - suggesting they are foreign currency cheques which cannot be paid into a Barclays account.

I repeat for them to go down the complaints route - they might get £80 to go away.

They are foreign currency travellers cheques issued by Barclays so there’s no reason for them to be sent away. Barclays will be able to provide an exchange rate for the sterling to be credited to the customers account. I’d be very surprised if they refuse to do that.

These aren't ordinary foreign cheques, they're issued by Barclays itself.

The OP states that Barclays will accept it, the problem is that it needs to be signed in branch:

"Barclays Bank refused to accept it into our Joint Bank account and was instructed that he should sign the cheque and then they would bank it

Did this and travelled back into town on the bus about 8 miles away AGAIN they refused to take it and said he must now come into town himself to a BANK in a pedestrian area  My husband is awaiting a  new knee and is extreme pain and couldnt possibile walk that far There are no branches in the vincinty or even ten miles away they are all CLOSED they wont allow him to post it ANY Suggestions what to do "

For just c.£80 you'd think its value would be below the counter limit and they'd just pay it in without the OP's husband needing to be there in person.

I wholeheartedly agree with you, but it is not that simple.
The Travellers cheque section of Barclays would have been closed down many years ago, their foreign cheques department has been made redundant so there is physically no way a counter clerk can process that foreign currency t/c.
If you start a formal complaint your query will get seen by someone that has authority to pay you the £80 odd and chuck the cheques in the bin.
That is what I would do. You have been messed around by them so any idiot complaints officer will see that it is an open and shut case.

    I disagree.

Although they no longer issue travellers cheques, they continue to have liabilities on their books so they will have a procedure to process them.

When they originally issued this TC they’d have debited the customers account and credited an internal liability account. All they need to do is debit the liability account and credit the customer,
albeit with an FX thrown in. Indeed, the branch has already advised that they can do this.
