NTL dial-up problems

Anyone out there who can help with this problem?

Until I'm connected to broadband I'm still using dial-up with NTL Freedom, it's been causing me BIG problems for months as the dialup number is continually engaged or if you do get online it drops you out - sometimes within seconds. There is a second number, I can get online with this, and use explorer, but outlook express will not allow me to send/receive emails. These numbers have been manually configured.

A few months ago NTL encouraged everyone to download their dialer - which I did on my pc - but it's my laptop (that I'm now using continually) that has still got the manual configuration. Apart from installing the dialler (and lots of unwanted c**p), is there anyone who can suggest what I need to 'tweek' to solve my problem. To be honest I wouldn't even know how to access their 'dialer', as it's not available on any link.

I have spent time with their tech support (at 50p per minute - but refunded), but they just didn't seem to have a clue, and I suspect the lad I spoke to was reading of a screen and knew even less than I did!

Nothing you can do about getting engaged, it happens to the best of us, you can use your second number & it's just a matter of changing outlook settings to use the second number.
Click tools->accounts, highlight your connection, properties, connection, untick the always use this connection box.

I would agree with drlight. You could try manually adding the second number so you have both to use on your laptop - make a new DUN connection. <dial up networking>

To use Outlook Express with both numbers - Outlook Express -> tools -> accounts -> connection tab -> untick the box which says 'always connect to this account using'.

I've been using NTL for quite a few years with few problems. Engaged tones could be to do with the network generally, not just NTL. Having manually set up multiple dial up networking connections for years, I ignored their offer of a dialler and am fine! :)

    I'm getting = 'socket error 10051 No: 0x800CCC0E'

I have also sat down with my laptop (running XP and OEv6) and my pc (98se OEv6) and checked all setting are identical.

researchr - i have been with NTL for 3 to 4 years but cannot remember them saying i should download their dialler. I have had no problems with the service. I am happy but am now forced to change. NTL BB is cheaper at 9-99 for 12 months and i sometimes get angry with the 2 hour limit when i am talking to someone on msn chat
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D
  • NTL have more than one phone number you can use, ask them for an alternative else post the phone number you are using here, and maybe others will contact or PM you with an alternative.
