Just to update, I had a video survey and have been quoted £4000. I also got an online quote for £700! I can't imagine that £700 would be worthwhile for the movers.0

We moved from a 3 bed through terraced house last year to a 4 bed semi about 5 miles away. They brought a big wagon for the furniture and boxes, and a smaller van for the garden stuff. We got 3 quotes, 2 locals and a bigger regional company. We went with the local company that came out and did a survey, the other 2 did video surveys. We paid £1,250 in total, plus £50 cash in a thank you card for beer money. We packed all the boxes ourselves, ended up with about 100 medium sized boxes overall.
If the £4k quote is for packing and moving, that might be a decent price. Can' see anyone doing a decent job for £700. If you think a days labour is gonna be about £150-£200, and there might be 5 or 6 on a crew, then then around £1k has got to be near the absolute minimum to empty a house and unload at the other end. if you are paying for packing materials and time on top of that, not sure. We decided to pack everything ourselves to save a bit of money but also to make sure we didn't pack anything that would just end up in the loft at the new house for the next 20 years. Started packing a month before we moved.
The people we bought from chose to go with a man and a van option and it was a disaster - they ended up with their belongings on our new drive, the neighbours drive, the footpath, pretty much anywhere they could find space. We went off for a coffee while they packed our house, then mostly just did a bit of tidying up while they unloaded at the other end. The vendors were still at it late into the evening.
Don't forget that until you have exchanged you won't know for certain if the completion day is finalised. The movers we chose allowed us to pencil in the day, then pay a 25% deposit a week before when we knew the completion date, then the balance 24 hours before moving. A lot of movers will keep most of your money if you cancel and they can't accommodate the changed date.
