Can I receive SMS from the UK while in Australia at no extra costs. How long can my trip be?. Thank you.

Depends on your plan, but if you have roaming enabled (either because your plan includes it or you're paying a daily charge of £7.86 or £6, depending on when your plan started) the incoming SMS itself is "free". 

Don't think there's any problem with the duration of your roaming unless it were for several months.
