Bathroom Mould

This is my bathroom.  We've tried all sorts of mould remover products over several years, and had a new fan installed.  The shower is over the bath, and we always take showers, never baths.  The only  thing that had some effect was scratching at it with a wire kitchen sponge. It always comes back as strong as before.  Before we got the new fan, we'd leave the window open 24/7.

The mould is also on the ceiling, mainly above the shower, although to a lesser extent over all.  Any ideas on what else we can try? Thanks.

What kind of fan do you have installed? Does it have a humidistat so it will run until it's sucked the moisture out?

I'd remove and replace that silicone with stuff that's mould resistant - it's almost impossible to properly kill mould once it's in the silicone.

You can also use mould resistant paints like Zinsser permawhite on the ceiling. I would use a bleach based mould remover on a sponge first to "wipe off" the mould, and then once dry paint with the Zinsser. I wouldn't spray the mould killer directly as it will just get into the air and drip down.

Not sure if it's a humidistat.  It comes on with the light then keeps running for a while after the light is turned off.

Does it come on by itself when the light is off? If not, it's not a humidistat. It's currently just running with a timer.

    No, it doesn't.

If you’re looking to clean it up I found an amazing product which cleaned similar mould under window. Spay with ‘Astonish mould and mildew blaster’. Leave on, don’t wipe away. Gone in 20 minutes. Absolute miracle and less than £2.00!

After shower I always wipe away excess water from around the bath and tiles. Leaving droplets of water on tiles and bath will cause the mould.

I painted our artexed (poor choice) bathroom ceiling with a Dulux bathroom mould-resistant paint and there's no regrowth of mould after 5 years.

I'd recommend getting rid of the orange discolouration on the grouting as it contains bacteria.

It's worth mentioning that this stuff is basically just bleach, so you can use thick bleach just as well.

Replacing the silicone is better, as mould can mean the seal has failed - and no amount of bleach/astonish spray will reseal the shower.

I've personally not had much success with the Astonish product.
