I took my car key in to have a new battery fitted, luckily I did ask How Much before I handed it over.
    Nearly £30  :o
I declined and did query the price, but no, it was not an error.

Looked on YouTube, bought pack of batteries, fitted battery & re-programmed key fob myself for around £3
    Good on ya I say.

From fitting headlight bulbs to buying coffees, there is a whole world that will charge an arm&leg for the convenience but taking back control is what will save the pennies (or pounds).

    And that's the whole point...
you decline before you pay for whatever item.
Yes, I agree, but the "point" of the discussion is that how do you feel about walking away. For some, I am sure it's water off a ducks back, but for others, no so easy to do.

Some of us are somewhere in the middle, and giving ourselves breathing space to make an informed choice, is the key.
I can't believe how many people don't/wouldn't walk away.
I wonder if this is a gender, age, location thing...
FTR, I'm 70+, female and live north of Watford Gap.

As I said 'pay up or put on your big boy/girl pants'.

I've already said how I feel so bowing out of the discussion.

Blimey, I'd have wanted the goujons to be bowling off-breaks for that money.

About five years ago, was trying to persuade my workplace to install a simple coffee machine to benefit clients and staff.. During my investigations I found out that the actual cost of what goes into the cup was 2p.   That bit of infomation lodged in the Shock part of my brain and it's still there, saving me a lot of cash.

Currently across the pond and after too many years in the UK I've forgotten about the tax being added.  So you look at something and think "ok, that's affordable" and then get shocked by the extra 13% tax added.  And then in restaurants they normally add another 18% tip.  which you can decline of course.  We do tend to do this and then tip in cash.  It means the staff get the full amount of what we are giving rather than losing percentages to banks and employers.

I was at the Afghani greengrocers in the local high street (we have 3 in Southend) the other week, when I spotted six-packs of rambutans for sale. The price of produce is usually reasonable and unusually this didn't have a price on it so I asked. I wasn't embarrassed to say I thought £7 was too expensive!!

Similar can be found in Waitrose for £2.50:

Another example from this evening: when filling up on fuel, I spotted piles of these bars dotted round the service station without a price:

I knew it would be expensive but didn't realise just how much so I asked. A whopping £7!!! I was not ashamed to say "I'll stick with the fuel".
