I've definitely had times when I've said yes to things, thinking that the cost would be reasonable and then realised it was more than I expected - rarely have done anything other than just pay up.

Was ithe signage in compliance with the Price Marking (Food and Drink Services) Order 2003?

    https://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/2003/2253/article/7/made

this doesn't seem to cover the actual problem of not knowing what the cost is because the display board is flipping from one rapture purchase to the next.  When what you want is finally displayed it will have the full price in ££ but you have about 3 seconds to read that before it flips to the next rapture.

I wanted to get something from some fast food place and was doing the drive through.  First time ever and not a place I normally go to anyways.  So got to the order bit where there is an ad display and was asked what I wanted.  I said I wouldn't know until I could see the menu.  Stunned silence.  Then the chap said they were only available inside.  So I had to go park and go inside.  Well I didn't have to but I did.  Highly annoying.

Once you've said 'yes', it's too late.

From reading the original post, the OP had the option to say 'no'. But didn't.

If that had happened to me...

I would have asked the assistant for a menu that shows the prices, possibly explaining about the electronic display. Then spent a few minutes studying it, preferably with a "tut-tutting" queue behind me. Then handed back the menu, explaining that the prices were unreasonable.

I do get irritated by places that conceal their prices and then charge more than one could reasonably expect.

Was it a chain or a local business? Makes a difference to me. If I go somewhere on a day trip we always buy coffee. Yes its expensive, but I like to support small businesses.
    Each to their own.

If you were "down with the kids" as I am, you would know that these establishments prefer you to pre-order (and pay) using their app on your phone. The app does, of course, feature the entire menu and has handy buttons allowing one to "Go Large".

I took my car key in to have a new battery fitted, luckily I did ask How Much before I handed it over.
    Nearly £30  :o
I declined and did query the price, but no, it was not an error.

Looked on YouTube, bought pack of batteries, fitted battery & re-programmed key fob myself for around £3

At order-at-counter places, i'll usually hang back and wait for the overhead menus to switch and have time to read the options, before joining the queue when I know what I want. When you're not under pressure its usually not too much extra time to read and decide.

The place I struggle is saying no to extra charges on the bill eg service charges - I fully believe that in this country that the normal menu prices should cover the costs of running the business including paying staff a fair wage, so service charges squeezed into the small print are not needed. Usually they'll bring the bill over and give you a minute before taking payment. However sometimes they're already hovering with the card machine and I don't always remember if it included a service charge back when I read the menu.

Yes, I agree, but the "point" of the discussion is that how do you feel about walking away. For some, I am sure it's water off a ducks back, but for others, no so easy to do.

Some of us are somewhere in the middle, and giving ourselves breathing space to make an informed choice, is the key.
