I know there's various tracker apps, some paid for & some not so right at the start let's discount the paid for apps.
OH is going to London by themselves in a few weeks & they're the one who wants to be able to be tracked, so we can also discount the 'spying on' side of it as well.
They live in Apple-Land whereas I'm an Android - Samsung specifically, so I don't have Find my iPhone on my phone.
They will be leaving their iPad behind and last time they did this that's what we used - but the connection was so bad. Must've been at their end (they were at a festival some place in London) as my WiFi was just fine.
For devices they'll have with them - iPhone (15 i think), Apple Watch (ultra 2) and certainly 1 Apple AirTag at least.
Is this (Find My.. via their iPad) the best option & it's a case of the signal is what it is or is there something better?

Both Google Maps and WhatsApp have location sharing features that work cross-platformOfficial MSE Forum Team member. Please report all problem posts to forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com4

My partner and I use Life360 to track each other. I have iphone and my partner uses android1

Not sure about life360 but I presume it’ll have the same drawbacks and advantages as the others mentioned and same as apple’s findmy on iphone/ipad.Ie it all depends on your other half’s network connection and GPS lock.I’d speculate that apples findmy may work best of all because it uses wifi and cell triangulation when gps is not available… but maybe the others do too.You can test by having him share location on findmy and WhatsApp / messenger all at the same time.WhatsApp and messenger it’s just a simple case of hitting the plus next to the message box then click on location1

Assuming OH trusts you with Apple account login, you can use Apple's Find My via Apple's Web site. The accuracy of Fine My depends on many factors, including the number of other iOS phones in the areas as they pass on information transparently by Bluetooth.1

You don't have to use an Apple device to use FindMy, simply logon in any browser/device to "iCloud.com" with the appropriate Apple ID and FindMy is available.1

For the life 360 of you - do you use the free or paid versions? For just simple tracking I think free seems just fine unless I've missed something? I don't need to see where they were 30 days ago.
Also if you had the option of using their own device (ipad left at home in our case) is there a reason you'd use life360 over FindMy on their device? Other than life360 being an app on your own device so therefore you may say it's 'easier' or more convenient, although as I sit down for my tea & both devices are on the table, neither would be easier than the other to open.
Just to be clear, I'm not trying to poo-poo anything here. Just seeing if one will give benefits the other doesn't.0 -
We use WhatsApp and Googlemaps, neither are great
How does Life360 work? Do you have to open the app every time to share your location with others?
I believe Apple's Find my app is always on unless disabled as is Google maps0 -
Just to be clear, you will be tracking the device, not your oh.No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0
