It depends on the app.  Sometimes you can connect tablet to your TV via HDMI and use the TV like a big screen for your tablet.  But some apps don't allow you to share the content.
I bought an adapter but it wasn't compatible and couldn't connect any of my android devices. I am trying to search for another one
Not all Android devices have the necessary to support an HDMI output via their USB ports. You need to check the spec for DisplayPort Alternate Mode (DP Alt Mode). Typically, the higher spec recent devices from Samsung, Google and Huawai are more likely to work.

I was also going to recommend a stick of some kind. Google Chromecast or Amazon Firesticks work well in my experience for upgrading older smart TVs to more modern usage.
I Google Chromecast and it said it was being discontinued. Can you use fire stick for apps like netflix. We only have version with ads
    Yes      .

I have been searching for free version to cast with as lots of apps appear to be free but when you try and mirror they want a subscription. I will have a look for a fire stick too. Are there any things I should be careful of when getting one as I presume cheap often means dodgy and no idea how much they cost

What about Roku. If I get either Roku or fire stick I presume you still have to pay to have netflix, Disney, nowtv etc. At the moment we have Nowtv sky sports, Disney with ads and Netflix with ads.

Roku doesn't run Android apps. They will have a Roku equivalent.

Can I buy an adapter or find a way to watch apps from Android tablet on my TV.

The issue with Firesticks is that they don't carry the Google Playstore, so you'll have to sideload some applications. You can even load an alternative playstore.

But the ones you have named should be pre-installed. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Amazon-Fire-TV-and-Fire-TV-Stick-Apps-and-Games/b

Personally, I use an Android box. Amazon Firestick HD specs are a bit low, with 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. My Android box has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

The sticks have an app library in effect and you add the app of  the channels that you want to watch - but if they need a subscription you still need to pay for that.

OP, we were recently in a hotel in Denmark where I could cast Netflix, Amazon, and some other apps straight from my mobile to the TV's they had. Worked well. Sky is geo locked so won't let you watch anywhere overseas. If your TV has cast capability, you should be able to do it - Youtube usually works well so worth testing with that. My 13 year old LG TV still has cast working.
