Airline baggage purchase price

Hi, I recently booked return flights and baggage with a known airline.  When I looked at the breakdown, I had been charged £4.50 MORE for the one suitcase on the outbound flight. The airline said this is due to there being a lot of baggage, wheelchairs etc., on the flight.  I am one person so why should I pay for the baggage of families and wheelchairs?  The flight was not full when I booked.  I can’t find anything on the internet regarding this airline’s “Policy”. Have anyone had this experience?  Thanks.

Welcome to the world of dynamic pricing, you were obviously happy to pay the price when you hit the BUY button.

Are other passengers being charged £4.50 per person less than you for a single suitcase ?

Well you are not.  As Ayr_Rage points out, it is just the dynamic pricing model. Many of the LCC’s will increase cabin baggage or checked bag prices if algorithms pick up demand for that bag type.

On Ryanair flights, I have previously paid different prices for luggage on Outbound and Inbound flights on the same route, just as I have paid different prices for the flights themselves.

Also just be careful with self-service baggage machines when checking in luggage for the hold. In Copenhagen airport, after getting my baggage label, when I went to weigh it the Ryanair machine showed 5.9kg, well under the 10kg for which I had already paid. But the machine said this was 'excess baggage' indicating I would be charged. I had to ask for help from the rather unresponsive Ryanair staff who were sitting there. They seemed more interested in chatting between themselves. But after seeing my mobile boarding pass they accepted it included a 10kg hold allowance.

Also, and off topic, on board the flight the attendants gave contradictory instructions. We sat in the seats beside the emergency exits at the wings, and the attendant made it clear no bags or coats could be stored under the seat in front and had to store everything in the overhead lockers. Fair enough. But during the flight, when we had to get a bank card from a bag in the locker, a different attendant said there was no problem leaving a bag under the seat!

Supply and demand; basics of economics. Supply is finite as the plane can only carry so much luggage and cargo. If there is high demand the price goes up, if there is low demand the price goes down, so you will be impacted by the purchasing of others just in the same way you are with everything else you buy

I thought I was remembering correctly and having recently booked flights from London Stansted to Tirana and Tirana to London Stansted a cabin bag was priced at £15 for the Outbound flight and £16.50 for the Inbound. Guess people are stocking up on Raki.

No doubt different flights on the same route will attract different prices.

my experience in an exit row is that bags need to be in the overhead locker for take-off and landing. Fine during the flight but have always had to pop them up again when seatbelt sign for landing goes on.

    Exactly this.

Take off and landing, no loose items or bags in the exit rows.  During the flight you can of course bring items down from the overhead bins to use. Items must be restowed prior to landing.

    Both flight attendants were right.
