Which retailers offer cashback at all nowadays? I normally use the card only checkouts, but when they are all busy, I use the checkouts that accept cash. I pay by debit card, but it is a long time since I was last offered cash back. I live in an area with a huge number of cash machines, so it is not a cash desert.

I've no idea who does, or doesn't offer cashback, but I seem to remember that retailers were banned from offering it. There was an issue, possibly with people overspending, and retailers were told to stop proactively offering it at the till.
Local shops round here all offer it.
Morrisions, Sainsburys, asda etc all offer it.
Would not expect any retailer to offer it on contactless though. Cash requires PIN for security.
Firstly remember that tap and pin is a thing

Secondly remember that ApplePay has security which is why a contactless card can only pay up to £100 without a pin whereas ApplePay can go much higher, have just tapped for a £5k purchase

You are correct, ApplePay and Google Wallet are both technically "User device verified" transactions and so provided the terminal is a modern compliant terminal it can accept them up to it's transaction limit the same as chip and PIN transactions.

But to go back to the OP's question, has anyone received a cash advance (aka cashback) using just phone (with or without PIN) from ATM or retailer?

And was it an Amex card loaded to the wallet?

I imagine that very few people have ever even tried. Personally I have never used cashback in any form and I have been an adult since before it was introduced, it seemed a big thing in the early 2000s, but as far as I am aware it has been almost dead for the best part of a decade and certainly the last five years.

Outside of the UK yes, via an ATM.

I've never attempted it in the UK as virtually never carry cash. I wouldnt expect a credit card to work, in the same way places won't give you cash back on a physical credit card with chip and pin but no idea if a debit card would.

Thanks for your 22 May message, flaneurs_lobster.  I downloaded the Link Cash Locator App and then asked about Apple Pay Tap to Cash and received the following reply:

    Good morning,

    Thank you for your enquiry.

LINK’s cash at the till service requires a customer to use a physical card and PIN to withdraw cash.

We would advise you to contact your card issuer who may be able to offer further assistance on alternative cash back solutions which may accept Applepay.

    Kind regards

I have iPhone with Apple Wallet app, in which I have virtual Amex card and need to access cash with this, if possible, while my physical Amex card is damaged. I have made purchases using my Apple Wallet, with my Apple Pay and Amex, but have not found a retailer that does cash back at the till, unless I use my physical Amex card.
Cashback is from a ATM/debit product (which Amex don't offer in UK AFAIK) as you're access your own funds; any charge/credit card products are cash advances and retailers don't usually offer them even with the physical card.

Barclays Bank UK has offered NFC withdrawals with their own machines and banking app but not from retailers.

I think Wetherspoons also allow this. The only supermarket I recall doing this recently has been Morrisons
