    Update for anyone interested!

It turned out to be completely unrelated to the water meter change, and in a bizarre coincidence, the battery for the gas smart meter ran out at the exact moment that the water meter was replaced.

When the battery runs out, the gas supply will shut off. The gas company fitted a new gas meter and the problem was solved.

The batteries only last 5-6 years, so watch out for that if you've got a smart meter!

Thanks so much for all your comments, appreciate the ideas

(Side note re the gas fire: the fire itself was safe and is still connected, but the chimney was leaking 'smoke' through the mortar near the top so there was a risk of CO coming back into the room. We were told not to use the fire until we'd had the chimney repointed and retested, but since the plan was always to replace it with a burner, we just haven't bothered. Gas fires scare me anyway :D )
I have learnt something today, that my gas smart meter has a battery in it, and my gas could cut off if the battery runs out. !

Did a bit of googling and it seems some smart meters will cut your gas off is the battery goes dead, and some will not, so it is pot luck.
They should beep when they are getting low ( like a smoke alarm) and send a message to the supplier, but they seem not to be pro active in responding to the warning.

Some will also record erratic readings which can lead to wildly inaccurate bills.
Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –
