Yes. Probably give it a couple of months.flaneurs_lobster said:

Would it be cheeky of me to cancel the credit card and take out a new one? Has anyone done this? Would Santander block a new application even if I pass the credit test?
Presumably you would clear down the card balance to zero as a prerequisite to closure then wait a decent period of, say, a month? then re-apply?0 -
At least I won't have to calculate what my shopping will be or how much to deposit into the account in advance.
Also my DDs total £534 per month so I will have £2 cashback after paying £3.
I am only keeping the account open as I just opened 2 Edge savings account.

You can close and apply for a new one however it may be more than a few months, I had a Santander balance transfer card (if that changes anything) which I paid off in January 2024, I had a couple of idle soft checks for another card from them months later and was given 0% chance on their site, I was able to get one in April this year - not to say you would have to wait 15 months but it might be more than a couple you have to wait though. I was a good customer, paid card on time every month, previously had car finance with them too paid in full.Hattie627 said:
I took out a Santander Edge credit card on May 28th last year and have used it for all card spending since then, with 2% cashback. Most months I have received around £15 cashback (max allowed) less the £3 credit card fee, meaning about £12 net per month. I clear the balance on the credit card as I go along, so never pay interest. I've kept my Santander Edge current account going, really just to get the Edge Saver, and cover the £3 fee with the 1% cashback on the usual household direct debits.flaneurs_lobster said:
Best cashback on spending deal that I'm aware of currently is actually with Santander, albeit a credit card.goatfaced said:

Santander Edge card pays 2% on just about all spend up to £15/mth with a £3/mth fee so £12/mth max for a year. 1% after 12 months.
I use it to buy gift cards at Airtime for my supermarket spend, they give 4% cashback paid as mobile phone bill credit.
Not exactly simple but probably the best general return.
I'm a few days off going down to 1% cashback on the credit card. The maximum cashback remains at £15 but needs double the spend. Would it be cheeky of me to cancel the credit card and take out a new one? Has anyone done this? Would Santander block a new application even if I pass the credit test?Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:
People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

Many thanks for this. I'm thinking of just continuing with my existing Edge credit card rather than risk the vagaries of the credit card application process, with the potential to be blocked. It still pays a reasonable 1% cashback on almost all purchases (not limited to supermarkets and travel as with the debit card cashback on the Edge current account, soon to end) against a monthly fee of £3, so should still return me roughly £4.50 cashback per month after the fee (on current spending pattern).Nasqueron said:

Similar situation for me but I still have two old credit cards with 0.5% cashback so it's not too much lower than 0.8% which is the maximum for second year with Santander Edge.Hattie627 said:

I might close the edge card and if I cannot get another then my wife can apply as a new customer and add me as a supplementary card holder.1 -
Good idea. Do you know if you can pay the credit card with a debit card? Currently I have two credit cards allowing it and one that doesn't. It would mean I could buy my supermarket vouchers with the credit card then get 1% cash back from nationwide when repaying.flaneurs_lobster said:

I can't use airtime for my network but I get 4% back on Aldi vouchers through ONSI (said I'm an Amazon flex driver).0 -
You can pay Santander credit card with a debit card via internet banking but not in the app.
Are you sure you get the Nationwide cashback? Often those cashback offers exclude financial services.1 -
I'm pretty sure from my calculations on last months spending, but I can give you a definitive answer next week when the cash back is paid, because paying a credit card is the only card spending I've done on that account this month. If I get no cash back that will be why.

I had the notification on my Edge current account about them cutting back on the money back. I only get just over the £3 a month fee back anyway but every little helps as they say. So I applied for the Edge Credit Card which is at the moment offering 2% back for the first year then dropping to 1% for following years.
Filled in the forms, submitted and got instantly turned down. Queried it and was told to check my credit score. They even supplied the 3 credit companies they use to check your status. So I checked on all 3 and on all 3 my credit rating was exactly as I thought it would be, 'Excellent'. So phoned Santander to ask why I'd been instantly refused and they couldn't answer. They just said maybe it's because I have too much credit available to me ???
I have a Santander basic account credit card I have never used, a Barclay Platinum 0% for 23 months on purchases/transfer etc which I've only recently received, and an ASDA everyday credit card which iI I only recently received this month to use purely for my ASDA groceries and ASDA fuel. None of those two have outstanding balances.
Santander told me I an appeal or apply in 30 days to see if I will be accepted. I've been with Santander donkeys years, before it was Santander in fact when it was Alliance and Leicester Building Society, so a good many years and I'm really disappointed with them. In fact I was really angry to get turned down. I don't have any outstanding credit anywhere, in fact I dont have any credit of any kind.
Miffed off to be honest and once my Edge Saver is up in a few months time I'll be leaving Santander and finding a better bank.

I would say "finding a better" bank is likely an unquantifiable task. You could well find one that offers you another credit card, only to be dissatisfied in another way with their service.FlossieFlump said:Miffed off to be honest and once my Edge Saver is up in a few months time I'll be leaving Santander and finding a better bank.
Best to facilitate yourself of the best offings from each bank, rather than limiting yourself to one bank. It's just business, and nothing you should take personally.
