Via Ethernet Laptop Broadband Speed 200Mbps Desktop 893Mbps.

Options
I have an HP Pavilion laptop 15 bw069na and I have Virgin Media 1000Mbps internet and I connected my laptop using an ethernet cable and the download speed is  200Mbps and the WIFI download speed is 50Mbps.

With my desktop connected via ethernet the download speed is 893Mbps.

Is this a limitation of my laptop and can anything be done to improve the speed?

Both laptop and desktop run windows 11

Your laptop has gigabit wired ethernet onboard:
Does the network cable run directly from the laptop to the router? Is the router port also gigabit?
Is it exactly the same configuration as you're using for the desktop?
Your laptop WiFi is 802.11n which rarely exceeds 100Mb in practice, according to people on the internet :)

Try using the same cable for each, not all ethernet cables are capable of carrying higher speeds and make sure the wifi adapter is turned off if you want to use a cable

I did use the same cable and port on my router, and tried the speed test multiple times with the same results, the laptop is significantly slower

If it has then what could be causing the difference in speeds?
I swapped the cables between laptop and desktop so used the same cable and router port.

Try this solution (or anything else on the thread):-

"I Have Fixed the issue on my brother in laws new PC. in my brothers case it was not the board at all. its a setting. Step one go to Device manager, Step two go to network adapters. (Find The one with ethernet in the name) Step 3 Right click and click on Properties. Step four select advanced and find Energy Efficient Ethernet and turn that option off. Step 5 find Speed and Duplex and change it from auto negotiation to 1.0 Gbps Full duplex. and voila. Restart your pc after clicking ok."

How are you testing the speed?

Any software solely on the laptop that interferes with the network? Strict antivirus/security solutions can be massive drains on performance. As above, it could be the network adapter running in some kind of limited mode.

It's possible that, although your laptop has a gigabit port, the internal hardware of your laptop can't handle the full speed it's capable of.
If you're getting 200 megabits then you're exceeding the 100 Mb spec; that might be all it's capable of.

Has the laptop got the same spec as the PC, memory size,  motherboard and memory speed, processor speed etc and all the other bits that could well have an effect. Are you actually comparing like for like.

It could be a bit like having a motorway to your door and you trying to compare a Lamborghini with a Ford Fiesta, the road is capable of supporting both at their top speed but only one is capable of utilising it all.

As suggested, see what programs might be running in the background ie Defender. Also check that you have up to date drivers

I wouldn't get too hung up on the difference as you probably won't notice it during normal usage
