Specifications says nominal consumption is 0.909kW for heating & 0.846kW for cooling with a starting current of 4.6A. Call it 1kW for round numbers. You wouldn't want or need a 16A fuse.
Although a 13A fused spur off a ring main would supply enough power, I'd personally favour using a dedicated feed from the consumer unit. As long as you have a spare slot going spare (or one that can be repurposed).

Thanks. Unfortunately no spare slots in the consumer unit which I believe is why the first company to quote suggested fitting an external consumer unit running from the meter box outside. This is where the additional quote of £660 to have this dedicated feed comes from.

I want this installation to be safe and trouble free, but equally I don't want to splash out £600+ extra if this isn't necessary.

I assumed that quote was for a brand new home consumer unit, which sounded ok, but if it's just a small second consumer unit in the meter cupboard straight off the meter then it seems pretty high unless less there's a really long or difficult run of swa needed to reach the Aircon unit. Although if you are going the additional consumer unit route you could make sure the new additional consumer unit has some spare ways so you can add things like car Charger, outside electrics, heat pump etc in future.

The electric meter is outside on the side of the house with clear access, so I can’t see any complications. Annoyingly we do already have one additional consumer unit taken from the meter for car charger, but this only had room for a single connection so a second box is needed.
