It’s not clear if the old saw has packed in totally or is just past its best. If the latter it could be gifted to the neighbour and the new saw retained for OP - some line about not wanting the new saw trashed by non stop pallet chopping may come in handy.

Simply keep the old saw and continue to lend that one if asked.

Keep the new one for your use only, if it bothers you to be effectively subsidising your neighbour.

How much is a new saw? About £40?

Does the neighbour do you any favours?

Personally I wouldn’t bother. It’s hardly the end of the world. I’d rather lose out on £20 than my neighbour thinking of me as a tight !!!!!!.

    Thant’s just my opinion, however.

I'd completely agree with you, there's always the flip side of "if it's only losing £20, then it'll only cost them £20"
  • Buy a new one and tell the neighbour that you are borrowing it from someone at work, just keep it in a cupboard in your home. Then offer them the old one to them so they can get it repaired for themselves.
Not stated how the saw is broken, so that might help people reply back to you. Maybe it is just a new blade that needs replacing, they don't last forever.

Buy a new one and continue to let him borrow the old one.
When it gives up let him keep it and get it repaired.
    An act of generosity :-)

I would not ask him to pay half.  What if one of you moves - whose saw is it?
I would tell him that it needs replacing and that you would rather he bought his own as it is a large expenditure.  If he is decent, he'll offer to chip in or pay for the repair.  If not, no loss.
Being kind and decent is good; but sometimes people start taking it for granted - and taking you for a mug....

Tell your neighbour the saw needs replacing and ask him if he'd like to go halves with you on a new one, which you'd then jointly own.

If he refuses, buy the new saw yourself but don't ever let him borrow it under any circumstances. Tough I know, but some people just take the mickey.
