It will be a high price because you have no UK driving history and are higher risk as a non-resident.
Did you try a comparison site such as: https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/temporary-insurance-non-uk-resident

You're not a UK resident. You have an accident, by the time the insurance companies have stated their processes you're out of the country. They have to factor this risk in.0

There is no good deal for temporary car insurance - what they seem to do is look at the cost of hiring a car for an equivalent amount of time, then knock a tenner off. 200 quid a week is not unusual for temporary car insurance. The only alternative seems to be to hire a car.
The system in the UK is not like on the contininent, where you get personal insurance and can drive anything - I guess its another case of rip off Britain.
I have spent a large amount of time phoning different companies and on the comparison sites, and even where it states they will insure you, if you dont have a UK licence and are non resident its virtually impossible.
Also some people get confused because you can get insurance for 12 months if you return to the UK and are resident but after that you have to exchange for a UK driving licence - becuase you are then permanently resident.
The option of any driver insurance also does not seem to exist any more.
Im happy to be proven wrong though - if the possibility appears again in the future id be happy to know about the particular company.1
