Has anyone heard of this situation?  Rightly or wrongly, I gave my info about my credit card so my elder son could order some food.  He went on to use it without my permission and so I thought I would deal with the situation by cancelling said credit card and getting a new one.  Imagine my surprise when my son used the old card information again and it was accepted by the credit card company.  I telephoned them and was told that it didn't matter how many new cards I got my son would still be able to use tge old information with the company he had used to get the food.  I'm gobsmacked!

Yes. Because the details are automatically updated, as far as I am aware, unless the card was lost/stolen, which in this case it was not.

Tell CC to block payments to the company.

But why blame CC, you need to look in the mirror & blame son.

I wish I had a pound for every time people simply think stopping their card will stop transactions like this.

Google Visa Account Updater. Mastercard have the same..

Reporting the card lost or stolen doesnt stop existing CPAs that were setup before the theft. They too get the updated number to use.

Sounds like a continuous payment authority was setup which goes through a different set of processes for subsequent payments... a bit like a DD but with less guarantees and protections. Cancelling the card, reporting it as stolen etc will not impact any existing CPAs.

You must request the bank to cancel the CPA but note that this will be a universal block, you cannot block it by card or user or account with the merchant etc. Some banks are better than others when it comes to cancelling the CPA but percist and they all will. Your only other option would be to cancel the account.

Could you not just ask your son to stop using your credit card? Maybe he doesn't realise that he's phone/computer has saved the card details and putting his payments onto your card, he needs to delete the card details from his phone/computer.

If they used their phone & paid via apple pay (or android alternative) the card automatically updates to the new one.

You thought you'd deal with the situation by cancelling the card rather than talking to your son.  If you can't communicate with your son then why trust him with your credit card details?

Credit cards are a guaranteed payment method.  Cancelling the card doesn't stop transactions.

If your younger son ever needs money for food, maybe transfer £20 into his kids bank account (eg. with Starling or Monzo)

The Apple Pay/Google Pay is the only explanation that would explain what is happening and if the transactions are being made this way, your benk can deregister your son's device to prevent further usage.

Sadly not both Visa & Mastercard have account updating service that allows retailers to request new card details where a CPA is in place.
