I would have thought 'buttons on the wrong side..... for a woman' is actually pretty obvious to all but those who want to be difficult!  On menswear the buttons are traditionally on the right hand side and on womenswear on the left.  The OP ordered an item for a female and arrived with buttons on the traditional side for men.
Seems to me that everyone understood that concept but were querying OP's assertion that this translates into "so could not be worn by a woman"!
Having had one or two items from 'menswear' sections of charity shops which button up on the wrong side I would agree it is a little fiddly to button up and take off at first. As I don't usually carry a sword it hasn't inconvenienced me when drawing it.
I understand women's clothes buttoning up on the opposite side is to allow for breastfeeding but can't really see how it makes much difference! I'd guess it was to make it more awkward for women to draw a sword and is an instrument of oppression.

    Thank you, everyone.

Re buttons issue: as you may have guessed, I'm not in my first flush of youth so very unwise to try to carry off a unisex look. Tee hee! Buttons on the wrong side is an issue and even if they are moved to the correct side, there remains the issue of the button holes.Guys, I understand why you're perplexed. I know, I know, you'll be rolling your eyes as you read this. Perhaps that should have read "should" instead of "would."

But joking aside, your answers confirm what I suspected, which is that I was indeed a prize dope for not reading the returns policy more closely, that the company is almost certainly "shonky," that I have learned a cheap lesson and that I should go for the 35% offer. I'll let you know if ever it arrives. The offending cardi will go to a charity shop.

Would it work as a jumper if you sewed it closed?

No need to sew it, just leave the buttons done up.

I've never looked at someone's buttons before to notice if they were the wrong or right way for women's wear. Wouldn't even cross my mind

Shame you have to give it away. Can't you make use of it of an evening to hunker down in as opposed to wearing it out

I'm very observant about all things clothes and shoes and I really don't think I'd notice that a random female I didn't know was wearing a man's cardigan (or jacket).
I might notice if it was a friend and we were sat opposite each other for a while but I wouldn't mention it.

I'm curious about the style of this cardigan that clearly shouts 'menswear' to the OP.

Unless the quality was poor (as it often is from these companies) I'd take the 35% refund and wear it.
And I'm certainly not in the full flush of youth either.

I don't sew, maybe could sew a button on if push come to shove but closing up the holes and making new ones on the other side? I'd be standing there with a Stanley knife hoping for the best!

OP sadly when it comes to returning to China, you have to take what is best and that is often their offer of x% refunded.
