If you have young kids go for polypropylene it's easier to clean and fairly hardy.

not wool if there is any chance of carpet moth infestation - they're a right pain to get rid of.

It does tend to collapse over time though, especially with the wear of children, where as wool seems much more resilient. I have found that wool pretty to spot clean with sprays, either cleans up well with a carpet cleaner (something I use annually).

I have seen horror stories about them, but never actually known anyone have the issue in the real world, any idea how prevalent they actually are?

I won’t get another wool carpet for this reason. They destroy the carpet under/behind furniture before you even realise they are there.

We have a real issue, I'm preparing to replace the carpets with either polypropylene ones or LVT.

Sprays, traps and vacuuming keep levels down - but are not a solution.

*And squashing/vacuuming the blighters whenever possible.

Depends how much you want to spend and how often you want to replace it.  If you want hardwearing which last for decades and can be cleaned over and over again high quality wool mix can't be beaten.  If you intend on changing carpets every 5 years save money and buy a cheaper option.

Where I live there are carpets made from some kind of man made fibre, which are ten years old, where they get exposed to direct sunlight there is now no pile whatsoever - just the backing of the carpet. I guess whatever fibre it is can't stand up to the UV in sunlight.

We have 80% wool mix ( good but not top quality) for the hallway, stairs/landings and part of downstairs.
It is wearing very well and mainly cleans up OK. Some minor problems with carpet moths but has not actually made any visible damage.
For the bedrooms we have Polypropylene fibre carpet,  because it feels nicer underfoot in bare feet and does not need to be as hard wearing.
In both cases we had good quality PU foam underlay.
