ATM didn't give me long enough to retrieve the note. Company unhelpful.

Next time, use your local post office to withdraw money or "cashback" at a supermarket. Then you need not be as fast as Superman!

Supermarkets dont operate the cash points.

Sainsburys did - perhaps still do if there's any which haven't been handed over to Notemachine yet.

Sainsbury's Bank does, but that's a different company to the supermarket.  The supermarket staff won't be able to help with any queries or problems with the ATM.

Apparently Sainsbury's sold all its ATMs last September:

It was Sainsbury's supermarket staff who dealt with the routine stuff with cash machines - filling with cash, changing receipts, removing swallowed up cards etc.

This was a pretty unusual arrangement AIUI. And only in larger supermarkets, smaller stores were entirely dealt with by HBOS back in the day, then LBG later on. (I think HBOS also did some other branded ATMs - I remember getting a Bradford & Bingley branded receipt once from a Sainsbury's Bank ATM.)

You're right though, there was nothing supermarket staff could do beside offer the company phone if they wanted to call their bank (although I think even this was eventually withdrawn from guidance because of security concerns).
