Need to work out how to link to BA avios if booked on AA website.
Should just be a case of selecting "British Airways" in the FF field and entering your BA number when booking.  If not when booking it can be done at online check in.

AA seem to allow slightly larger cabin bags than BA so looking like we will book through them.

Current plan is LHR JFK MIA LAX returning LAX JFK LHR, no night flights which is one of my red lines. Wanted to add Washington DC and New Orleans but fare jumps from 450 to 2k....

Half way through will do SEA to LAS to save a lot of hours of driving but likely on a low cost although again need to look carefully at bag size rules and charges....

Usually you’re allowed two transits in the US so that’s probably why the price shoots up if you want to do more.

Looking at the baggage allowance there doesn’t seem to be much difference. BA is 56x45x25 whereas AA is 56x35x20 I think. So slightly smaller. Also it depends on whether the transatlantic flights are AA or BA codeshares as I think each airline has its own rules rather than a standard ticket rule?

As stated just put your BAC number into the FF field on the AA website. It worked seamlessly with mine - AA’s IT seema a lot better than BA. If any of the flights are on BA then you can put the BA PNR (different to the AA one) into the BA app. Makes it easier to choose seats though it depends on what status you have. Don’t sign up for the AAAdvantage scheme as that will confuse the issue.

Making sure they are aa flights transatlantic as they allow up to 51 inches/130cm for soft sided garment bag.

Have been looking at nylon duffle and roller duffle bags, thinking they should qualify as soft sided garment bags but am now wondering if soft sided garment bag only means a suit carrier and not a generic soft sided bag.

    Any advice?

They are referring to suit carriers. And the 51 inches means the total dimensions. So length + width + height needs to be less than or equal to 51.

The 130cm is obviously a win compared to 56+35+20 = 111cm but it turns on whether 'soft sided garment bag' means any soft sided bag such as a duffle bag or specifically something that is a suit/dress carrier and how they decide on this.
