Pothole broke suspension spring

A friend asked me for some help in trying to get her late husband's Rover 75 out of their garage a little while ago. Hadn't been moved since before he'd died, maybe 9 months earlier.danrv said:Thanks for the replies. Correct about damage to the tyre mentioned earlier. All fixed now by a local garage.
The scraping noise must have been the spring in contact with the tyre. Garage said they were surprised it hadn't punctured it.
Apparently it'd started fine, moved a few metres, then a sudden puncture and it wouldn't move forwards or backwards... The spring had gone ping, and had gone into the tyre and back out again. It took quite a bit of finagling to get the wheel off!
A few of us got in another friend's car in their drive one time - and as we did, there was a ping as a rear spring let go.
Several manufacturers have done recalls to add protection cups to front struts to prevent sudden tyre failure when springs fail on the road.1
