DVLA vs Car Vertical

Little advice please. I'm looking at a used car and when putting the number plate into DVLA to check it's history its different to Car Vertical (and other similar sites) results. The DVLA matches the dealers details and DVLA seems like the most trusted source. But why the discrepancy? Thank you!

It may be that the person selling the car did not want to keep the plate for some reason and coukdn’t be bothered putting it on retention and then selling it or handing it back to DVLA.
