Little advice please.

I'm looking at a used car and when putting the number plate into DVLA to check it's history its different to Car Vertical (and other similar sites) results.

The DVLA matches the dealers details and DVLA seems like the most trusted source.

But why the discrepancy?

Thank you!

The dvla will only tell you the make, model & colour, and the MOT history with mileage at MOTs.

So car vertical reckon it is a different colour, model and the mileage differs year by year?

Find another car, unless it is ultra rare, like the only bright pink Bugatti Veyron in existence and you really want it.

It could be that the plate's just been transferred onto (or off) that car.

DVLA have the current vehicle bearing the plate.
Third party searches may have a short lag, and are showing the previous vehicle to bear that plate.

DVLA (https://vehicleenquiry.service.gov.uk/ and https://www.check-mot.service.gov.uk/) will tell you some information - basically, MOT history plus what's on the V5C - but third party services are required if you want to know more, such as previous sale information or write-off information.

Model the same. I think thats the only thing.

    I am leaving it.

But is this actually something dodgy?

Did you do a CarVertical check on the chassis number?

Definitely something to do with a recent plate change.

I wondered if it was a plate change, but it would have been put back on from retention (well pseudo retention, DVLA normally put a hold on the original number whist it is transferred off, or would issue a previously unallocated number of the correct year if it was registered with the private plate), so it would either have the data transferred from the private reg to this one, or it would have no history, it couldn't be "wrong".

When we changed car for same model, just newer , the private plate was transferred from the old car to the new one.

For years the private number showed up as the old car on insurance lists and even on the manufacturers records.
They kept advising  us that the previous car was due a service  despite us telling them each time that the plate no longer belonged to the that car.

That's what I meant- if a private 'plate has just been transferred onto the car, the history of the previous bearer of the 'plate could still be attached to the current vehicle.

But who transfers a used private 'plate onto a car they are trading in? It could only be the original 'plate from this car which was dormant, or a previously unissued one with no history, so there might be gaps in the history, but it couldn't have "wrong" information.
