Fridge freezer issue!

How long do fridge freezers last?

I moved into my flat sept 2022 (rent of family member who bought it in 2009 I think) flats was build 2006-2008 I think

the Fridge freezer I think has been in the flat since 2010-2011 as was replaced so 14/15 years old! Maybe newer not sure!

The fridge works 100% fine! The freezer sometimes works & gets to -15oC (but the seal isn’t tight as can be peeled off) & when you open then shut freezer it sometimes takes ages to get cold fan don’t come on a much!

When it works it stays around -14/15oC but sometimes gets to -5/-10oC

i am thinking of getting new fridge freezer or is this an easy fix?

Time for a new one. Mine's nearly 14 and about to be binned for similar reasons. New ones should be noticeably more efficient too.

-15C isn't low enough for most frozen foods - should be down to at least -18 C (0F) I think....

IMO, it depends. It can be an easy fix if the problem is with just the temperature sensor (or the thermostat) .
Unfortunately, nowadays 'easy' doesn't mean 'cheap' and it's usually cheper to buy a new device than repair the old.
I know a fridge-freezer working fine since late 80s. The mechanical thermostat was replaced at some point, but that's it.

With a fridge freezer that old, it's likely that even if it the current problem is an easy fix something else will fail soon after.  Time for a new one.

It was an easy decision when our Hotpoint started to play up - freezer ok, but chill fridge failed.  30 years old, so we'd had our money's worth!

Shop around for someone who will remove the old fridge for you.  We bought our new Bosch from John Lewis, who took away the old one for free.

As you are renting (from a family member) are you or your landlord responsible for the fridge freezer?

Do you have a rental agreement that specifies this?

Does your landlord being a family member mean that you have an informal arrangement?
A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

I am responsible for the fridge freezer as I am
in the process of buying the flat, that should be completed in a few weeks! So want a good brand that lasts for a long time

The fridge part is cool 😎 & works! The freezer is currently at -5/-10oC when I turn it off then straight back on the fan spins then suddenly stops! Scrap that the fan just came on! I think it issue with the seal/door as sometimes have to shut & open it a few times for the fan to start

o well the things can’t last forever

Update oddly the fridge freezer (freezer part) is working again and is at around -15oC-18oC

while the Fridge has ice built up around the back

    seems odd!

Does the fridge part have a drain hole at the back low down and if so have you tried clearing it with the tool that came with it or something like a pipe cleaner?
Alternatively do you know the make and model number so that you can search online for the manual, that might be helpful.
