Sky took money illegally from my account

Sky increased my bill. They said I could cancel free of charge if done within 30 days. So I changed to a different provider within that timescale. Still charged me £200 cancellation fee, despite reassuring me 5 times over the phone that I don't owe them money. They threatened me with debt collectors several times too, even though I don't owe them anything. How do I get my money back?

Where they said you could cancel within 30;days, did it also explain how to execise the cancellation, ie by notifying them in some way?2

If this was by direct debit you may be able to get your bank to refund the money under the direct debit rules.F12 said:Sky increased my bill. However, be aware that makes no judgement as the the rights and wrongs of the dispute. Sky could still pursue you for the £200 they claim you owe. You can defend any claim and ultimately a court would have to decide who is right and who is wrong.1 -
Was the cancellation for broadband only?
That is the only service that has a get out clause regarding mid contract rises, it does not apply to TV services.
If you believe they have incorrectly (not illegally) charged you then you need to make a formal complaint.2 -
You switched providers, but did you formally tell Sky you were leaving.? You usually have to do this by phone through their disconnections department before it becomes official and will then receive confirmation in the post.3

It was broadband only. I've already made a complaint, not that's that has helped. They sent the letter about price increases and said you couldn't change provider free of charge if you didn't like the increase. But now I've found out if you cancel within the 30 days, they still say it's a breach of contractAyr_Rage said:Was the cancellation for broadband only?

Yes I formally told them I was going to change provider, over the phone. I have the paperwork too, but they still say I owe money and they are sending debt collectors after meDevongardener said:You switched providers, but did you formally tell Sky you were leaving.? I phoned them to make sure I done it correctly. I done the whole thing over the phone. But apparently it's still a breach of contract, even if it's done within 30 dayslittleboo said:Where they said you could cancel within 30;days, did it also explain how to execise the cancellation, ie by notifying them in some way?0 -
Did you have to give 30 days notice to leave but didn't?0

No, it was cancel within 30 days to not pay the early termination fee. I spoke it through with them on the phone. They have confirmed I don't owe them any money. But yet they still took £200 and are still threatening me with debt collectorsTheSpectator said:Did you have to give 30 days notice to leave but didn't?0 -

Given they have taken £200 & you are being chased by debt collectors?
If the debt is only £200, then unless you have got it back, there is no debt to claim.
Do you also have any other Sky services?Life in the slow lane0
