Lost mobile number

Can anyone offer any suggestions on this please.
At the same time as renegotiating my broadband, the company offered me a good mobile deal at the same time. They gave me a number to text to send them a PAC code as I wanted to port my number.
The next day I decided to cancel the phone deal so called the company to do this. I found out later they also cancelled PAC code request.
In the meantime my current mobile provider closed my account.
I called the 'new' provider to get a PAC code so I could port my number back to the original provider. They said that as they cancelled the previous PAC code request they were unable to provide one for the number I want to keep but only for the new number they allocated when setting the account up.
My original company said they can't do anything as the new company had processed the PAC code - they only cancelled it.
The outcome is neither company can access my old number.
Sorry for the length of the message, I hope it makes sense - does anyone have any suggestions please.
