22 April 2025
I was given this list when I asked Chase whether specific vendors I had previously purchased from were still eligible for cashback.
I appreciate it's difficult for a consumer to find out what the specific code in advance of any transaction, but for what it's worth some might find this useful.
As a suggestion, if anyone reading this has a transaction they think should have been included in the mccs below but wasn't, post here, others may find it useful.
Groceries
MCC 5411 - Grocery Stores and Supermarkets
MCC 5499 - Miscellaneous Food Stores-Convenience Stores and Specialty Markets
Everyday transport
MCC 4111 - Local and Suburban Commuter Passenger Transportation, including Ferries
MCC 4131 - Bus Lines, includes Charters/Tour Buses
MCC 4011 - Railroads
MCC 4112 - Passenger Rail (train)
Fuel and electric charging
MCC 5541 - Service Stations (with or without Ancillary Services)
MCC 5542 - Automated Fuel Dispensers
MCC 5552 - Electric vehicle charging

Thanks. Does anyone know if Costco falls under the groceries category? Got a big shop planned there and will use chase if it's 1%, but my Amex platinum cashback 0.5% if not (since Amex specifically have Costco at 0.5 rather than 1.25%).
If no one knows I'll do a small test purchase in the cafe first and report back!0 -

Having checked our business charge card spending, via Bank of Scotland (part of Lloyds Banking Group), the main Costco merchant classifications are shown as Buying/Shopping clubs, services. Payments made via PayPal to Costco are shown as Variety Stores. Neither of which full under the MCC Codes shown above.
From personal experience, M&S Food Hall purchases qualify for Chase cashback as it falls under Grocery Stores and Supermarkets. The Chase app shows it as Groceries.
My pay and display car park payment (local council) did not qualify, although it shows in the Chase app as Car & Fuel. These car park transactions did qualify for the 10% cashback offer from HSBC last year but they probably had a wider range of MCC codes for transport utilisation.2 -

I use Amex so the merchant code setup might not be exactly the same as Mastercard though.0 -

Although I think M&S are still having problems accepting contactless, so only worth doing at the moment if you have your physical card and know the PIN!0 -
TheBanker said:Do you mean the food hall that's part of an M&S Department Store, or the stand-alone food stores? I always assumed all the tills in an M&S Department Store would use the same MCC which I assumed would relate to Department Stores. I only ask this because I think you are allowed to take non-food items into the Food Hall to pay for them with your food shopping, if you want to.

EDIT:
Just checked MyRewards statement, for transactions made with my NatWest Reward Credit Card, and it shows I earned 1% cashback on a £9.50 purchase at the M&S department store, which is shown as a Supermarket Spend. Whether Chase classifies all M&S spending as Grocery Stores and Supermarkets remains to be seen.

Cashback awarded for drinks in the M&S Cafe this afternoon, although Chase have recorded it as being in another M&S store over 20 miles away 🤷🏻♂️
