I brought car for daughter : Owner v's Keeper ?
HI all
I would really appreciate some advice on this please, if possible
I have just purchased a car for my daughter would has just passed her test.
Been a bit of a nightmare with the garage but I am due to get the car tomorrow. I wanted by daughter details to on the V5C form so she is responsible for the vehicle. I.e. MOT , tax etc.
When I spoke to the garage yesterday and the garage basally said as I purchased the vehicle they have put my details on the V5C form so I presume as the new owner and said they had to do that and couldn't put my daughter's details. My concern is when I now give the car to my daughter and put her details on the V5C form that will 'add' another owner, which I don't really want to do, as could effect resale value. Is this how it works ?
I would be grateful for any comments as I may have totally misunderstood things, but if things are wrong I would want to try and correct as soon as possible. Garage have said they is nothing they can do now.
I also wondered if owner v's keeper effects any insurance premiums taken out. I.e. is it cheaper to be the owner and keeper of the vehicle ?
Would appreciate any help, comments or advice. Thank you for your time reading this.
Take care and thanks once again

Adding a second owner might affect the resale value, but only slightly. I'm afraid that the damage has been done in that the car has been registered with you as the first owner. The garage is correct that nothing can be done about this now. You should have asked them to record your daughter as the keeper on the V5C if this was important to you.
I wouldn't worry about it. As a new driver, your daughter is much more likely to reduce the value of the car by having an accident in it or by not maintaining it correctly. The extra owner on the V5C should be the least of your worries. The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.1 -
I don't agree that they had to put your details on the V5C, I did the exact same as you 18 months ago and the garage registered the car in my daughters name. But if it's already done I'm not sure that it can be changed without being a new keeper. Best to try and speak to someone at DVLA to see if there's a way it can be corrected.3

Their internal processes might say they register in the purchaser's name... but there's certainly no legal requirement to do so. And, yes, you're right that it would seem appropriate to register it in your daughter's name - it's likely to make insurance easier, apart from anything else.
There was a thread here very recently where somebody had had the same happen, and they got DVLA to change it.

I had a bit of drama with the dealership over this (but for my wife).
They initially suggested it would cause issues doing the paperwork in my wife's name, but having me sign/provide ID. They insisted that either she must be present or it has to be in my name.
Eventually we were able to agree to do the order form in my name (which I guess technically means I'm the owner), but the V5 was registered in my wifes name.
Unfortunately I suspect it's too late to do anything now.Know what you don't0 -
Thanks for the comments.
I just spoke to the dealer and they said it was their policy that they would update the V5C form with the person buying the car. They would only have registered the car if the funds came from my daughters so yes l am too late.
I think l maybe able to contact DVLA and explain but l am just a bit unsure how this will effect the insurance now.
Any ideas

I found companies that would let the insured behaviour my daughter and me being the registered keeper somit is possible but worth seeing if DVLA can do anything as per the thread you were pointed at.0

The OP can change the keeper online, and change the owner simply by giving the car to his daughter.
Adding a keeper to the V% is very unlikely to be an issue.1 -

The RK on the V5C has nothing to do with ownership.
If the OP (or rather their daughter) has any difficulty selling the car later they can simply explain what happened - ie their father was the RK and gave them the car as a gift.
I'd have thought it more likely that giving the car as a gift to a child who had no financial stake in it (and so could treat the car as badly as they liked) would have a greater negative effect on its value than an additional RK on the V5C.
