V5C mess-up by dealer - how to sort?

My son recently purchased his first car, a second-hand Renault Clio, from a dealer. My husband went with him to buy the car and ended up doing most of the talking as my son is a complete novice.

When the invoice for the car was raised by dealer, they addressed it to my husband. When my husband queried this, they told him that the name on the invoice didn't matter as there was no finance involved and they would make sure it was correctly registered in son's name. Husband wasn't happy but went along with it.

The new V5C arrived this morning and it turns out they have registered it in husband's name instead of son's. I appreciate that we can simply transfer it to son by completing the new keeper slip but this will show up as an extra owner on the V5C which I assume will devalue the car.

Does anyone know how we can get the V5C reissued in the correct name?

Many thanks

The dealer should be able to sort it with the DVLA.

I had a problem where through either DVLA or dealer problem I received the letter to say my trade in had been transferred, but it also stated my new car had also been transferred to the dealer.  A quick call to the dealer and he sorted it.

As your husband is now the register keeper the mistake cannot be rectified by the dealer.

A bigger issue is the invoice, that indicates that your husband is the purchaser and legal owner of the vehicle.

Who actually paid the funds and by what method?

    Is there a separate receipt?

Husband shouldn't have gone along with any of it!

It should be possible to get it corrected. Mine had both first and last name mispelled and an incorrect address, a new one with correct spellings and address was issued within a couple of weeks. I think I sorted mine directly (5 years ago) but probably a job for the dealer to sort as more than just lots of typos

Agree though the receipt needs to be in your son's name too, it's his purchase

It will also see the tax cancelled (with the loss of the remainder of the month in which the transfer took place) and require your son to re-tax it (from the first of that month).

To be honest, on a used car one extra keeper won't make any difference - especially if it's obvious that it's been transferred within the family.  It's only where there's been loads of different keepers that people start to get worried - the inference being that each person who buys it realises that it's a bag of nails and wants to get shot of it.

Is that really the case ?  Dad gifts the car to son making him the legal owner, doesnt really matter if the dad is still the registered keeper

Insurers ask as to who is the owner and keeper.

If there is any issue with the car then it is the purchaser that has rights and we still don't know who paid.

Looks like a right bag of worms to me.

Dad should've zipped it in my opinion, kids have to learn.

Its the dealer's error. In theory they need to:

    1. Re-issue the invoice in the correct name if appropriate, whoever physically paid for it.
    2. Offer compensation for the difference in value between x and x+1 previous registered keepers.

In practice, I suspect (the OP doesn't say) the husband did the money transfer, so 1 is a non-issue. And that for an older car (again, OP has supplied no details on age or num keepers) the difference in value is a) hard to evaluate, b) arguable and c) probably £0 anyway.

Its a non-issue if the son and dad are still getting on okay and the son lives with the dad, when they come to sell it. Just say "oh, it was registered in my dad's name" when it comes to sell it. I imagine insurance won't be worried either, so long as you properly declare who the main driver is.

It won't be obvious, since the V5C no longer shows previous keeper's name.

However, I agree it'll make no difference.
