We had Cityfibre install full fibre recently and were told we'd need 2 available sockets but that a surge protected extension lead would be ok. We'd decided on one corner in the living room for the router and ONT where we had 2 spare sockets, but then we realised we have a Hive hub so need a 3rd. We decided on the extension cable option in the opposite corner which is better anyway as there's already a small table there the router can sit on. Extension cables are perfectly safe as long as you don't overload them with items that heat such as tumble dryers, airfryer etc. 

You know that, I know that - but the OH won't accept it - EVERYTHING has to be plugged in to a real socket

I suspect that's an error on Talktalks part, surely it should be a VOIP (a house phone), an eero (only if needed, most I suspect don't), router/modem & the ONT. They also don't all need to be next to each other so the OP's thread is moot really.

Our's used to take up 3 because we don't have an eero (now on VM so only 2 needed).
