Voluntary NI Contributions – What to Expect After Requesting a Callback

  • I finally managed to talk to someone at HMRC and they said that basically I can't pay in installments because it has to be completed within 31 days. I guess I must be on an extension, as you say, because I originally tried to call back in February IIRC.

So now I have my 18 digit code and I just have to pull the trigger, but now I'm feeling slightly paranoid that I somehow managed to get through to a scammer. Just nerves from paying out pretty much all of my savings in one go I guess.
We assume that the years you have been shown you can pay are at Class 3 rates. By any chance have you been working abroad for any of those 10 or 11 years?  If so, you may be able negotiate a refund of the Class3-Class2 difference (about £600 per year) after you have first paid Class3 in full.

Anyone still waiting for a callback? I had a text on 4th June saying they’d try to call twice, and one missed call (technically two at identical times 🤷‍♂️) on 9th June. No voicemail, no other texts, nothing since then, no other numbers given to call them back - the ones I tried to call anyway were dead lines.

    NI TOP UP CONTRIBUTIONS

Is anybody still waiting for their callback? I received one call saying I was in the queue and that they’d text me so I could get details ready. I’m still waiting for them to call me back to take my money…! Just worrying I’ve been missed or is there a very long wait? Thanks.

I got a text on June 6th, saying they would attempt to call twice within 7 days (although it sounded like it would be just to confirm NI number).  No missed calls in that time and nothing since.  I called DWP last week and they said there were still 170 thousand people they needed to call so just to wait...it will take at lease into September and probably later.

Got initial call 5 weeks ago having applied for callback back in April. Not received second detailed call back yet.

Judging by comments above it could still be a long wait...

Made the mistake of giving them a landline rather than mobile number. Does anybody know if the second call comes from a withheld or the official number?

Missed a call yesterday and no idea if it was them...

I requested callback before deadline and had initial call in May to confirm NI number and DOB - the woman said I would receive a further phone call but since then - nothing. Today though I received a letter from DWP giving details of the years I could pay, amounts, and the difference each year would make to my pension. As I am already claiming my pension I had to ring HMRC to ensure "eligibility" so I rang the number expecting a lengthy wait but got through within 10 minutes. Everything was verified again and I got the bank details to pay to and the 18 digit reference. When I made the payment my bank verified that the account number was indeed HMRC so the cash has gone. I think there is now a delay until my new pension amount is calculated but I'm happy with that. I've only got to live 2.39 years to break even with my outlay :)
  • I haven't heard anything since I requested a callback.

Is there any way I can contact HMRC to follow this up please?

Nope, not least because you asked DWP for a call back.  They had over half a million such requests and are working through them as fast as they can.  They will get to you.

You could try giving the department relevant to your precise query a call, dead on 8.00am is likely the best time, a people have been getting through now.

After 4 months of waiting for the callback, finally got a text last Friday, saying they would call within 3 weeks...they called me yesterday and went over 5 years of gaps for the last 20 years and amounts I could top up.  Today called HMRC, got through in 10 minutes (morning time is better), gave the guy the amounts and he gave me the 18 digit code reference to pay...will take a few weeks to go through!  :)
