TV Licence costs

Do you have to pay for a full ears TV licence no matter when you get it?
I got a TV licence in December after moving from a property that had a TV licence.
The site says the TV licence lasts for the month you buy it in and the next 11 months but mine doesn't it only lasts till April.
In April my license renews and I pay the standard monthly direct debit amount.
My licence only lasts for the month I bought it in and the next 4 months and I am being charged more than double during that time.
I paid towards the TV licence for the earlier part of the year at my old address (it's in someone else's name and they're still paying for it).
I'm paying the monthly cost of more than 2 licenses at my new address.
Surely they can't get away with charging for 12 months services when they are only providing 5 months?
When I cancelled will I get a refund of the 7 months I paid for but never got used of?

I think you are confused. When paying by DD the first payments are double as you pay half in advance and half in arrears so need to "catch up" with that system. You will pay the current year in 6 payments then before the licence runs out you are paying normal monthly payments for next year.0

Watching Netflix (non-live events) Amazon, catch up TV such as ITVx etc, playing xbox, playstation, amazon, disney all do not require a TV licence.
Watching Coronation Street as it's broadcasted at night, and watching anything on BBC Iplayer does require a TV licence (unless you close your curtains when you watch Iplayer 🤣🤯)0 -
The way TV Licences work depends on whether you are on a payment scheme or you pay the full amount in one go.
As above, on payment schemes you pay double for the first 6 months of a new Licence, though that credit will be preserved if you move addresses (as long as you let them know).
If you pay in full, it's up to you to make sure they transfer it.
The April date for the Licence may have something to do with the price going up. You'd need to check what you actually paid depending on which payment method you are on.
As a general rule, the TV Licence payment schemes are very fair, but also very confusing.0
