I haven't read through lots of the posts here myself, but I'm assuming that Matt/Kevin/Luke (the authors of the guide) must have looked through a fair few as the guide says:

As it does also point out, of course there's no guarantee that it'll make a difference, but it doesn't sound like it's completely worth writing off.

I'm yet to be aware of any mediation session where the Defendant offers £0, to end in agreement with a PPC to drop their claim .... and I've been doing this stuff daily for well over a decade.  

Maybe message Matt/Kevin/Luke and ask them for links to these 'successes'.

I seem to recall there were some drop hands £0 cases last year. I didn't think that the guide was wrong when I checked it and liaised with the guys who wrote it. Probably fairer to say we had more £10 settlement examples but zero wasn't unheard of last year IIRC.

Although £0 would be nice given all the stress and the way it's been poorly handled, that honestly would be much fairer imo and something I'd be happy with and it sounds like there's still some hope left so fingers crossed!

Moorside Legal won't settle at mediation stage but they usually discontinue before the hearing fee has to be paid.
