Dryer broken after 1.5 years, Currys says "not our problem, it's out of warranty"

My understanding after reading this is that stuff should last a "reasonable amount of time" even if the warranty period is shorter. I bought this Hotpoint dryer 1.5 years ago (warranty is 1 year) for £400 and it's leaking water. I want to get a repair or replacement from Currys. But on the phone I was just told the warranty is 1 year and there's nothing they can do.

What is the next step? How do I get them to fix or replace the dryer?

FWIW, Hotpoint offer an extended 10 year (parts) warranty if you registered your appliance (though it's not necessarily what you asked, I thought it was worth mentioning)

We shouldn't confuse whether you are returning this under your statutory rights, or under warranty.

Regarding your statutory rights under the CRA , my understanding is that after 6 months from purchase, the seller can pass the onus on to you to prove the fault was inherent, which is usually done by commissioning an engineers report.

To play devils advocate, it could be useful having someone look at it regardless, as it could be something simple like a loose hose connection or a blocked outlet, for example.

Worth mentioning that John Lewis offer a 2 year guarantee as standard on their large goods (though that's not to say JL are perfect either - we get complaints about both!).

As it is older than 6 months then your 1st step under consumer rights, is to get a independent report to confirm a inherent fault.
Then you can go & ask currys.

You can’t, in practice, force Currys or any other retailer to fix the dryer. At least , not in a timescale that will suit you. So, you need to get it fixed, and you need to get a report on what the fault is. Then, armed with the report, you can decide whether the fault has arisen from a fault in the dryer that was inherent when you bought it.

My recollection is that the parts warranty from Hotpoint requires you to pay an arm and a leg for their engineer to visit.
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

It’s interesting that, if you Google the problem the AI overview comes up with a long list of possible causes, most of which are essentially operator errors, with simple fixes. That’s not to say that the OP is at fault, of course.

Gather evidence that the dryer has broken due to it not being suitably durable, rather than say having never inserted the lint filter, this would normally be done by commissioning an engineers report. The cost of the report can be added to your claim but obviously is your cost to carry if they say it was user error.
