Amazon Firestick 0r Roku

I have sky, with Netflix 'attached'. Two friends state that with Firestick they pick up "everything" without resorting to subscriptions or a dodgy mate to 'put things on it'
This cannot be true anymore can it? I dug out my old firestick (doggy mate from 8 yrs ago/kept buffering...) and can get onto amazon, but nothing free.... Confused.
Which to buy? Are there any freebies (on either) (apart from the 'normal' range of channels)

You certainly cannot access paid for subscription channels for free without resorting to dodgy methods.0

The dodgy Firesticks have certainly got a foothold now - at the weekend, in conversation with neighbours, I found that 3 out of 4 houses had a "dodgy" Firestick - the only one without was the home of a copper !!0
