Credit rating & Bill Error

Sorry if this thread is not in the correct forum, but i couldn't find a credit related forum.

Here goes....🙂
I'm mid 50s, always had the highest credit score possible and never got into any trouble with anyone.

Then 1 year ago i moved house, and in the process of transitioning from "house A" to new "house B" a utility bill which i thought had been paid went unpaid. Leading to a default.

I paid it as soon as i identified it as unpaid and thought that would be the end of it. But it stays on you record for 6 years!!!

I went from 100% credit score continuously for 35 years, then one utility bill unpaid for a few months (now fully paid), and my credit score has collapsed leaning a mark on my record!
This is totally disproportionate in its punishment.

I believe the utility bill issued which led to the default was incorrectly stated, it was raised for £1,000 for the new house, House B, which i did not moved into for 6 months after completion date, hence the bill went unnoticed but how could i have a £1,000 bill when the house was empty for the 6 months relating to the period of charge covered by the default bill?

This £1,000 bill led to the default. If i can show the bill was incorrect could the default be removed as it was raised erroneously?

Thanks for your help.

You can discuss energy bills over on the "Energy" forum. You'll need to provide full details of the bill; meter readings and dates, and the applicable tariff.

It is not punishment.  It is a record of your payment history.  Nothing more - nothing less.

Now for the good news, you do not have a credit score.  You can safely ignore the meaningless number generated by CRA's in an attempt to sell you their products.  Once settled default with have minimal impact on your credit standing with lenders.

Bit harsh if it was a couple of days late but not if it was for "a few months"
