They should be taking it according to what they stated when you set it up. My health lottery ones varies between the 12th and 14th but the dates are clearly stated in the spp. If you bank with Monzo they show you upcoming direct debits a few days in advance (the actual direct debit they csn see coming through the system rather than a prediction)
The only 2 I have seen that had this variance are Santander (took a DD earlier when the DD date was on the weekend) and Barclays who have a strange billing cycle that I can never remember which means it varies by 2-3 days and thus, maybe 5 if it's landing on a weekend! Barclays at least email you to tell you the DD date
My last few were taken on these dates but not sure when the DD was due as these were all Mondays
