Payment dates for DD

Is it part of the DD guarantee that they should go out on a particular date apart from if it falls on a BH or weekend? Most do but some like my Postcode Lottery one can be up to a weeks difference between months! I tend to top up my bank account from my savings account just prior to any DD or SO going out. But this one and to lesser extent one to others you can never that sure when they will go out!

They should inform you at least 10 days in advance if the date is going to change than what's been agreed but that doesnt mean just because its a different date than last time that its not what has been agreed. For example the agreement could be for the 2nd Thursday of the month and so the date naturally will jump around but thats as was agreed, similarly it could be every 28 days rather than every month so would get progressively earlier in the month.

Looking at the website, they say they take the payment on the first Friday after the 3rd of the month

For some bizarre and unexplainable reason BT (now EE) keep changing my DD date. This has caused my account to be overdrawn a number of times.

I want it to go out on 3rd or shortly thereafter. I set it up on their billing page to reflect that desire.

I have been advised that DDs are claimed 10 days after the bill is issued.

What seems to be an issue they can't address is that the bills should therefore only go out 10 days before the 3rd, not some other arbitrary date that then triggers a payment based upon bill production date rather than desired payment date.

It has been raised to executive payments a number of times but they have not resolved it, even after cancelling and reinstating the DD.

I am complaining to the bank next:

    The Direct Debit Guarantee:
The Guarantee applies to every single Direct Debit, protecting you just in case someone makes a mistake, like collecting your money on the wrong day or taking the wrong amount.
    • If there are any changes to the amount, date or frequency of your Direct Debit the organisation will notify you (normally 10 working days) in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed. If you request the organisation to collect a payment, confirmation of the amount and date will be given to you at the time of the request
I contest that providing a bill, although it can be argued as providing notification does not meet the terms of the agreement and the DD you have approved.

As per the answer above, the DD Guarantees only if they take the money on a different date than they had told you it would be and hadn't given you 10 days notice beforehand.

In the OP's case they were told it will be the first Friday after the 3rd  so it will jump about by up to a week as it can be any date from the 4th to the 10th unless the 10th is Good Friday in which case it would be the Tues 14th. It is all still sticking to a formula and so they dont need notice each month and can workout for themselves when the DD is going to be taken.

A company isnt obliged to take the DD when you want it taken, if you wanted your Postcode Lottery paid by DD you cannot insist they take it on the 3rd each month. You either have to agree to their formula, which means it will never go on the 3rd, or pay by a different mechanism.

As to your EE DD, what do the terms you agreed to state about when it will be taken?

The PPL e-mail a list of the collection dates for a year in advance for card payments, same dates as DD ones and as stated above between the 4th and 10th of the month

These are your payment collection dates for 2025.

I would consider that if the ask me when I want to pay that equates to them telling me hone they will take it, otherwise why ask me this:

If they give me the option they should abide by it, and not say we told you we were changing it on the bill. After all what triggers the bill?

Council tax, water, power, 4off mobile phones, amazon et al all manage to stick with an agreed date why not BT?

The problem is that a year has 52 weeks but, for some reason, only 12 months.  Meaning that for there to be 12 payments a year, the spacing has to shift between 4 and 5 weeks.

The obvious solution to this is that there should be 13 months of 4 weeks each.

Do you have a bank account that tells you the day before that a DD is about to be taken? Maybe even send a notification to of this?

What you have to remember is Lottery is a weekly game, so any DD will be taken in the same format. Hence the varying dates.

PPL collect 12 payments a year and it's not a weekly game.
